What is the Eight Mansion Theory?

People frequently confuse Eight Mansions with Eight Trigrams or The Ba Gua (八卦, also Pa Kua). The truth is, Eight Mansions does use the Eight Trigrams to plot the specific Chi for each of the 8 sectors (9 being the Center). This means there are 8 different types of Chi flowing in the Eight Mansions sectors.

Eight Mansion Theory is part of the San He Feng Shui (三合风水) method. It is very powerful, as it is tailored to the individual, and the house. Eight Mansion Method is derived from Yin Mansion Feng Shui (阴宅风水). During ancient times, practitioners used this method to determine the auspicious direction of a grave. Undoubtedly you’ve heard of Yin and Yang. Well, Yin at the extreme, is death. Less extreme than that, is sleep. So, a bedroom tends to contain a lot of Yin. Yang is the more lively counterpart to Yin. Yang Feng Shui is practiced on “live people”.

Eventually, Eight Mansion Theory was brought into the house and people started using it to improve their lives. Consequently, it became part of Yang Mansion Feng Shui (阳宅风水). Rest assured, this will not summon up creepy stuff. It’s just a school of Feng Shui.

FINDING YOUR HOUSE GUA

bagua.jpeg

To find the Gua sign of your house, you only need to know the sitting direction. The sitting direction is opposite the facing direction, and the facing direction is usually the same side as the front door. For example, if your house is facing South, your sitting direction will be North. If your house facing is Northwest, your sitting direction is Southeast. Simple!

To find out the Gua sign of each sitting direction, you need to look at the Later Heaven Bagua ~ Eight Trigrams, 后天八卦:

When you find the sitting direction of your home, locate it on the Bagua, shown here. So if the sitting direction is North, the Gua sign of your house is 坎, Kan (Career). If your sitting direction is Southeast, the Gua sign is 巽, Xun (Relationships).

The poem below is very useful when determining the House Eight Mansion Sector and Personal Eight Mansion Directions. Eventually, you can use this poem to find out the auspicious and inauspicious sectors of your home. It is rather tricky to get the hang of it, but feel free to email Jennifer at jennifer@fengshuistyle.us if you have questions. Hope you all enjoy it!
